After this small village in Sri Lanka was hit by the giant Tsunami (that struck Indian Ocean in December 2004) and uprooted it, the courage and the conviction of the people, with the help of NGO Sarvodaya and the government has rebuilt the village. The village which has experienced this Tsunamian Revolution is Damiyamgama, in the Kalutara district of Sri Lanka. The focus of this project is Self Help, so that the villagers could solve their own issues. This is an eco village model which rehabilitated 55 families. It is an attempt to live in combination of cooperative lifestyle with local environment with eco- socio friendly initiatives. Like consensual decision making, alternative economic models, recyclable, renewable and solar energy, alternatives for standard education and practical solutions, tailor made solutions for the villagers. The villagers participate in the decision making through village self help society. The attempt of Sarvodaya was to build houses and society in harmony with the nature and environment. The village thrives on green technology. Eco friendly material is used, roofs have small solar panels to support small appliances. The aim was to make the village self sufficient. This is the initiative of an NGO founded by DR. T. ARIYARATNE in 1958, the Lanka Jathika Sarvodaya Shramadana Sangamaya. But the entire project would not have been a success without the cooperation of various community based programs. Rehabilitation is not the prerogative of the government alone, the community, and the people should cooperate and stand together to help themselves. This is a lesson to the managers as you will see the village is well managed and is self sufficient along with being eco friendly. The various communities, organizations and programs run on an experimental basis are a motivation for the managers to manage their companies efficiently with the cooperation of its employees. The emphasis on eco friendly existence is a lesson to rural as well as urban areas too. |
